A Rare 17th Century Friesian Oak Canopy Bedstead

A Rare 17th Century Oak Canopy Bedstead A Rare 17th Century Oak Canopy Bedstead from Friesland. A profusely carved and painted tester/canopy depicting tulips, geometric designs and astrological symbols. The edge of the canopy with pierced fretwork decoration.
The headboard carved and painted with tulips, foliage and birds with fielded panels and fitted with two Secret cupboards enclosed by sliding panels.
The side rails fitted with two horizontal moulded panels with a centrally carved tree of life on either
side, the footboard again profusely carved and painted with a coffer type storage box fitted with a rising lid.
This bed is likely to have been commissioned by a person of wealth in the early 1630's in Friesland at the time of the height of Tulipomania.
The bed is morticed and tenoned using dry pegs which makes dismantling and reconstruction easy. Although this bed has undergone some period restorations, it is in unusually good condition and retains much of it’s original paint work. The bed base and mattress both new. The mattress hand stitched and pocket sprung, commissioned specifically to fit this bed.
