Northern Italy (Verona or Venetian region), 16th–early 17th century
Carved rosso di Verona limestone
A finely weathered pair of recumbent lions carved in rosso di Verona stone, each lying with forepaws extended upon an integral plinth. The figures display broad, schematic modelling, with shallowly carved manes and simplified paw and facial treatment, features consistent with Italian Renaissance and early Baroque stone sculpture from the Verona and Venetian regions.
The surfaces show extensive historic weathering and an attractive, naturally developed patina, with rounded high points and softened detail indicative of prolonged outdoor exposure. The warm reddish tone of the stone, together with the integral bases and restrained carving style, supports an attribution to a Northern Italian workshop active during the 16th or early 17th century.
The pair remain structurally sound, with minor losses and surface wear commensurate with age, and no evidence of modern restoration.
Condition: Weathered surfaces and minor losses consistent with age and outdoor use.
