16th Century Renaissance Bust Of Marcus Aurelius

The head and neck carved in statuary marble with the bust from a block of alabaster of Circeo - detailed work of hair with the locks beautifully arranged in thick waves – the beard magnificently rendered - the eyes originally with inlays – the neck encased in a muscled armour (thorax statos) with an impressive winged Gorgoneion to the centre of the breast – a shoulder strap of the armour (humeralis) detailed on the right shoulder – the other shoulder covered by a military cloak (paludamentum) fastened by a round fibula. From the right shoulder is emerging the row of round lappets (cymation) of the skin garment worn as undercuirras element (globa) – followed by the thick pteryges of the under armour (Subarmalis).
