A Rare Late 16th Century Early 17th Century Walnut Bargueno. This rare walnut Bargueno is constructed from solid walnut and decorated with gilded and pierced metal ornamentation behind which is red faded silk and fitted with a spectacular lock, gothic tower hasp and key all original.

The single plank shaped and rising top secured by ornate pierced strap work hinges above a fully fitted casket with a fall front. The interior profusely carved and fitted with five open compartments and a candle box above four dummy drawers over two banks of three drawers.

A Gothic Carved Chest Dating To Late 15th Early 16th Century. This Gothic chest unusual in design with a dovetailed construction adjoining the sides, front and back planks. The lifting lid with later hinges above the chest with a deep carved intricate front depicting the original carved roundels and Gothic arches. The lock being a 17th Century replacement raised on later feet. Good colour and overall condition for an early piece of furniture.

A 17th Century Oak Ecclesiastical Box. This wnderful piece of period oak furniture is raised on shaped end supports and fitted with a fall front.

An exceptionally rare chest bought from Northern France in original condition with few repairs. Dovetail joinery first appeared in the fifteenth century as an alternative method of attaching the ends of a chest to the sides. Numerous examples exist, but this was not as common a technique as the hutch. Dovetail chests cannot use the extended-stile design of the hutch, and so dovetail chests never have legs. Probably because of its difficulty and therefore cost. The dovetail-joined chests of the fifteenth century were very well suited to complex tracery carving over the whole face.

This 16th century travelling casket is backed with traces of the original maroon velvet covered by decorative metalwork. Fitted with the original lock plate and hasp and hinges raised on shaped feet. A rare survivor with wear and damages consistent with age

Elizabeth 1 joined oak and carved chest from the Exeter region. The front with two large applied arcaded panels with botanical imagery, with the lower rail carved with shell motifs and the upper frieze rail jewelled chain and link designs.

James I boarded oak box, with a front carved in nulled and guilloche decoration and the original lock plate. The interior is decorated with the original block-printed wallpaper lining all surfaces. The wallpaper depicts the royal arms of King James I and the Order of the Garter, surrounded by a formal infilling of flowers based on needlework designs.

Date: 1603 - 1625

Renaissance iron-bound oak desk box, featuring carrying handles and iron binding on all sides. The interior includes compartments and two drawers, with traces of polychrome decoration.

Renaissance marriage casket with carved decoration. The front features two medallions with the heads of a man and a woman facing each other. The medallions are surrounded by floral wreaths and scrolls. Each side has two large roses, typical of Tudor English work. The back panel is carved with diaper and guilloche designs, and the lid is adorned with a central medallion with floral designs.

Additional Note:
Henry VIII would have had similar boxes and caskets of this form and design in his palaces.

An interesting depiction of a male figure wearing a surplice with dagging around the edges – his left foot raised and resting on a tasselled cushion with Fleur des Lis decoration on the top side possibly representing Royalty. Bought from a client in Albi France.

Possibly Saint Elizabeth wearing a full length cloak gathered and tied at the waist and standing with her left leg slightly bent at the knee. Her right hand holding an open Bible with Her left arm falling at Her side. Original polychrome supported by a half moon base.

Unusually large pair of Atlantes Angels which would have been positioned either side of a substantial fireplace. Both male figures with their wings tucked to the rear – facing forward with their arms folded. The facial features extremely well executed with the curly locks of hair falling to either side. The rear hollow as one would expect. Unusual and rare to find a matching pair of such substantial proportions.

The price of £9995 is for the pair.

Formally owned by Nobility within the inventory of Poschwitz Castle and dating to the first half of the 15^th Century. This statue is a rare survivor covered in the original uncleaned polychrome. The face is expressive with tumbling locks of hair falling to the shoulders with gesso visible between the strands of hair. His hands are clasped in a contemplative thoughtful pose – he’s wearing a full length gown tied at the waist with what looks like a reliquary hanging from his belt - there is an old label affixed to the rear. The base into which the statue sits is later and has been made to ensure that the statue does not topple over – the statue lifts out of the base.

A set of three 16^th Century carved oak panels. The outside panels depicting wyverns looking inwards - the central panel depicting unity and love with the two wyverns backed up to each other with their tails entwined. The three panels framed by a contemporary carved surround. A rare survivor and ideal for hanging above a bed or a fireplace.

 

These six 16^th century panels are from a sequential set depicting a couple’s journey through life. Commencing when they met – when they become wed -when he goes away to fight – when he returns – then later in life at an older age. These panels were originally contained within a Bretton bed and are framed in the original 16^th century carved surround. These panels are framed with 2 being individual panels and two being double panels.

A 16^th Century statue of Saint Mark standing with a Bible in one hand and holding his robe in the other with a lion at his feet

A 16^th century Horse and Rider – two thirds life-size - covered in the original polychrome. The saddled horse standing with the right front leg raised with a decorative tasselled crupper and dock to prevent the saddle from slipping forward. The ornate leatherwork around the horse’s neck decorated with roses in relief. The helmeted rider in his finery grasping the reins in his right hand with a spear held aloft in his left-hand indicative of the horse and rider being on parade. This is an extremely rare and well executed 16^th century example of naturalistic workmanship.

The height of 80.5 inches is to the top of the spear. 

 

A 15^th century carved stone depiction of the Nativity scene with the Jesus as a child being cared for by Mary with oxen and horse overlooking. Much of the original polychrome remaining thus the features not being as worn as one might expect from an early example of this age.

A 16^th century/early 17^th century statue of John the Baptist in the original polychrome. John the Baptist standing with his right hand raised and pointing to Heaven – dressed in camel hair with a sheep at his feet – raise on a rectangular decorative base.

This 16th century statue of Saint Francis is coloured with the original pigment and is full of movement with one hand outstretched with the other holding a book. He is wearing the Franciscan habit secured by a cord with a cross suspended from his belt-line on the left side. A large statue with a partly hollowed rear side and an iron securing ring which would have secured the statue in place in the original ecclestical setting. Period restorations and wear as one would expect from a statue of this age.

A Copper-alloy enamelled 13th century Limoges Processional Cross with a 15^th century Corpus Christi. The obverse surface decorated with rosettes and other motives enamelled in champlevé on the four arms with a light blue background and central flower in turquoise and red. On the lower arm an applied champlevé enamelled bronze figural mount of Virgin Mary with red nimbus. The central 15^th century bronze Corpus Christi with a crown of thorns with His arms extended wearing a loincloth. The sides of the Cross are decorated with embossed volutes. On the reverse the field semée of copper alloy rivets with a large central enamelled roundel depicting who we believe to be Saint John the Evangelist – who is holding the Gospel in his left hand with his right hands raised in benediction. This is a very fine example in unusually good condition for it’s age and is of museum quality. Period restorations and mounted on a later oak collector’s base

The arms of the cross with decorative finials andf applied sheets on which are engraved haloed figures representing three of the symbols of the Evangelists – namely an Eagle – Angel and Ox representing Saint John – Saint Luke and Saint Matthew. At the base of Christ’s feet can be found an Angel. On the reverse the central field is embossed with an Angel (possibly Lucas the Evangelist or Archangel Sain Michel). On the Cross arm terminals are found with appliques similar to those on the obverse but this time depicting Angels on the left and right arms and the symbol of Mathew the Evangelist on the upper and lower ones with two floral appliques filling the upper and lower spaces above and below the central figure. The Cross rests on a square brass support attached to a bulb-shaped sphere decorated with large petals to the upper and lower parts wich is mounted on a later oak display stand. A rare collector’s item with period restorations.

This buckle came from a private collection which was accumulated over many years. The buckle is similar in design and age to the Sutton Hoo buckle though be it not in gold. Much of the enamel and decorative silver work remains and the buckle is stable. A rare surviving artefact.

This Celtic neck torc came to me from an established private collection. Extremely unusual to find a Celtic neck torc available to purchase. This torc has not been cleaned and appears to be in excavated condition. The two terminals and the twisted  silver body uniting the terminals are in tact. Due to size likely to have been worn by a woman no later than 3rd century. Extremely rare. 

This buckle came to me from a private collection. This bronze buckle plate is large and highly decorated with incised work. The buckle detached but still present. Fabulous sizeable example of 7/8th century work

This buckle plate came to me from an established private collection. The bronze plate inscribed with decorative work commensurate with the 7/8th centuries. Another rare survivor. 

This pewter Stoup for holding Holy Water of diminutive proportions was most likely used for travelling worship. The iconography depicts the Virgin Mary and Child surrounded by a decorative arched border affixed to a pewter bowl below. This is a rare example with the iconography similar to that found on pilgrims badges of the same age.

A Rare 12th Century Romanesque Font: Highly decorative and most unusual with the bowl carved with chevrons/diamonds and with foliate work below set on the original capital which in turn is raised on five later column supports with a stone base. This font was restored by Cathedral Works in Chichester with the entire piece being given a lime-wash to protect against acid rain.

This 16th century cauldron is raised on three legs with hoof feet and fitted with the original handle. There is an intricate design in relief of individual space large fleur-des-lis in the centre of the sides with an intricate bancd of smaller fleur-des-lis running around the bottom edge. The patina is original and the cauldron has not been cleaned.

This is a large 18th century tapestry from Aubusson originally from a manor house in France. Featuring classical ruins with a lake, a bird and a dog surrounded by trees. This has been professionally re-backed and cleaned plus it has undergone a chamber treatment used by museums to eradicate any potential moth or insect infestation. Hung at the top with Velcro to avoid any distortion normally caused by the use of irregular hanging hooks. A large tapestry in good condition considering its age

A Large Early 19th Century Needlework In The Original Frame. The gilded frame with the original glass and a plaque stating 'Charles 1st bids farewell of his children'. The needlework executed using both gross point and petit point in exceptional condition with no visible fading. Provided with provenance.

A fabulous detailed plaster moulded museum 17^th / 18th century copy of a Renaissance frieze. Depicting a battle scene in full flow – with helmeted soldiers on horseback brandishing swords and shields at the top above fallen horses and soldiers to the bottom. The cast raised lines which can be seen are an element which determines the quality of the cast. These signs produced by pieces of the mould were deliberately not removed nor touched up by the mould maker which helps to guarantee the fidelity of the cast to the original work. In latter period moulding techniques - the use of silicone rubber has eliminated all those marks on the cast surfaces. A Rare 17th Century Oak Canopy Bedstead A Rare 17th Century Oak Canopy Bedstead from Friesland. A profusely carved and painted tester/canopy depicting tulips, geometric designs and astrological symbols. The edge of the canopy with pierced fretwork decoration.
The headboard carved and painted with tulips, foliage and birds with fielded panels and fitted with two Secret cupboards enclosed by sliding panels.
The side rails fitted with two horizontal moulded panels with a centrally carved tree of life on either
side, the footboard again profusely carved and painted with a coffer type storage box fitted with a rising lid.
This bed is likely to have been commissioned by a person of wealth in the early 1630's in Friesland at the time of the height of Tulipomania.
The bed is morticed and tenoned using dry pegs which makes dismantling and reconstruction easy. Although this bed has undergone some period restorations, it is in unusually good condition and retains much of it’s original paint work. The bed base and mattress both new. The mattress hand stitched and pocket sprung, commissioned specifically to fit this bed.

Sword and Pen Watercolour backed onto canvas Signed F W Davis 1897. Frederick William Davis (1862-1919) worked chiefly in Birmingham, often exhibiting his works at the major London shows. Later in his career he accepted several commissions to paint scenes from Shakespeare's plays. Known works include a watercolour depicting Act111, Scene 111, of The Merry Wives of Windsor in the collection of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
